Permit for the Use, Exploration or Recovery of Historic Shipwrecks or Relics - Victoria

Description

You will need this permit to use, explore or recover historic shipwrecks or relics (including shipwrecks or relics in protected zones). You will also need this permit to:

  • use an historic shipwreck relic for the purposes of study, conservation or exhibition
  • buy or exchange a historic shipwreck relic of remove one from Victoria
  • dispose of a historic shipwreck relic.

A historic shipwreck relic means:

  • an article that appears to have formed part of a ship, been installed or carried on a ship, or been constructed or used by a person associated with a ship, and includes any marine concretions and accretions that have become attached to the article
  • is seventy-five years old or more
  • the article is included in the Heritage Register, or is provisionally registered in the Heritage Register.

To be eligible for this permit, you must:

  • correctly complete an application form and submit any required documentation
  • pay the prescribed fee
  • be willing to abide by any conditions placed on your permit by the Agency.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

The permit may be subject to conditions and the conditions can be revoked or varied at any time. The permit may also be revoked and / or suspended indefinitely or for a specified period.

Exploration or recovery of historic shipwrecks or relics together with specified activities associated with them is strictly prohibited (unless a permit is granted) and severe penalties apply.
