Plastic Bag Ban - Victoria

Description

The Victorian Government has implemented a state-wide ban on lightweight plastic shopping bags. Banned bags have a thickness of 35 microns or less at any part of the bag.

The ban applies to all retailers, including:

  • supermarkets
  • greengrocers
  • bakeries
  • pharmacies
  • clothing stores
  • restaurants
  • cafes
  • markets
  • food outlets.

Exemptions

The ban does not apply to:

  • barrier bags used for unpacked perishables (like loose fruit or vegetables or meat)
  • bags that are a key part of sealed packaging
  • garbage bags
  • nappy, dog waste or medical waste bags.
