Service type

Licence

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this registration you must:

  • Choose the council where your business is located and make an application in the approved form; and
  • Pay the prescribed fee.

You may be eligible for dual registration if your business covers two or more registrations on the one premise. Hairdressers and Beauty Parlours are like premises and are therefore not classed as a dual premise.

Planning approval to conduct the business may also be necessary in some circumstances.

Please consult the responsible agency for more information regarding eligibility requirements.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

There are prescribed ongoing requirements in relation to registered premises with respect to cleanliness, inspection of premises and generally safeguarding the health of persons likely to be using those premises.

Failure to comply with any of these requirements may result in the agency or council refusing to grant or renew the registration of the premises, and the registration may be suspended or revoked.

Duration

Registration generally remains in force until 31 December each year or for the period of twelve months from the date of registration, if so specified by the local council. Registration must be renewed at the end of each registration period if the business is to continue operating. Hairdresser and temporary make-up operators are eligible for a one-off registration with the local council (see Changes to Council Registration Requirements for Hairdressing and Make-up Businesses attached below). Temporary registration may be granted for a period of less than 12 months.
