You will require this registration if you are the owner of a cat or dog that is over three months old. This registration also covers all types of dogs (including dangerous dogs) that are used for security (guard dogs) or similar uses.
A dog is considered to be a dangerous dog if either:
- the dog is kept as a guard dog for the purpose of guarding non-residential premises
- the dog has been trained to attack or bite a person.
You are required to advise a person you are selling a dog to if it has been registered as 'dangerous'. Registration is likely to be subject to strict conditions, including conditions concerning the enclosure and fence used to contain the dog.
It is a mandatory requirement that cats are desexed unless they are exempt under the Act, kept for breeding at licensed premises, or the entire cat is registered and the owner a current member with an approved association.
