You will require this registration if you intend to operate any of the following types of accommodation business:

  • bed and breakfasts
  • rooming house
  • hotels and motels
  • guesthouses
  • boutique hotels
  • rooming houses
  • self-contained accommodation
  • farmstays or holiday camps
  • hostel or student dormitory.

You do not require this registration if you operate any of the following:

  • caravan park
  • house and granny flat
  • public hospital or nursing home
  • retirement village
  • temporary crisis accommodation.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this registration you must:

  • apply to the local council in which the accommodation is located
  • include all the required documentation and information
  • submit a 1:100 scale plan of the premises, showing the proposed use of each room
  • pay the prescribed fee.

Planning approval to conduct the business may also be necessary in some circumstances.
