You will require this licence if you intend to operate a tow truck. This licence is attached to a vehicle, not a person. There are a limited number of licences and these may be purchased from existing licence holders.
A tow truck issued with this licence may provide accident towing services to vehicles of any gross vehicle mass that the tow truck is capable of towing. This means that it can tow cars, trucks or any other vehicle that it is capable of towing.
In the Melbourne and Geelong greater area, tow trucks operate under an accident allocation system. Tow trucks licensed to operate in other areas of Victoria may attend an accident scene outside the Controlled Area without an allocation.
Vehicles with this licence may also offer trade towing services.
It is an offence for a person who does not hold a tow truck driver accreditation to drive a licensed tow truck or a tow truck that is being used for the purposes of providing accident towing services. Passengers must also be accredited.
A condition may be imposed to prohibit a tow truck from entering a specified area and being used to tow a damaged motor vehicle within that prohibited area.
