Code of Accepted Farming Practice for the Welfare of Cattle - Victoria

Description

You may be required to comply with this code if you intend to farm cattle. It applies to personal farming or commercial farming, feedlots, display, bartering, exchange or sale, and should be read in conjunction with the Code of Accepted Farming Practice for the Welfare of Farm Animals during Transportation.

The code outlines the basic requirements for persons responsible for the welfare and husbandry of cattle (cows, heifers, bulls, calves, etc). It provides guidance for farm owners, managers, stockmen and related animal handlers on a range of requirements for food and water, shelters and accommodation, protection from climatic extremes and predators, handling facilities, management practices, and identification.

Compliance with this code of practice is not mandatory. It provides guidance on how to meet your legal obligations to treat animals humanely. However, by complying with this code, you can demonstrate that you have met your legal obligations. Providing that you have complied with this code can be used as a defence against a charge cruelty or aggravated cruelty to animals.

Please consult the responsible agency for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance (if any) that may be required.
