You will need this licence to drill wells or bores to access water from underground.
A driller's licence is classified according to the type of aquifer and is endorsed with the drilling methods that may be used. This ensures the skills, knowledge and experience of a driller will match the groundwater protection requirements.
The aim of licensing drillers who carry out bore construction, abandonment or other work on an existing bore is to ensure:
- the protection of the groundwater resource from contamination, deterioration and undue depletion
- the long- term economic production of groundwater of the best possible quality.
Please note that a separate works licence is required to authorise each bore or well that is drilled. It is a condition of every works licence issued under legislation that the work is carried out under the direction of a licensed driller.
