You will need this approval if you intend to use your existing Artificial Fertilisation Licence to carry out certain research using artificial fertilisation. Artificial fertilisation research requiring this approval involves the use of either:
- human gametes obtained in the course of an in vitro fertilisation procedure or for use in artificial fertilisation
- human eggs undergoing fertilisation
- human embryos whether or not live
- any person who is a participant in an artificial fertilisation procedure.
Please note that certain research prescribed by the regulations (such as observation) of embryos created by assisted reproductive technology excess to the needs of the person for whom it was created, are exempt from requiring this approval.
General or specific approval may be granted on application to the Agency. You may need to also seek approval from an Institutional Ethics Committee designated by the Agency.
