You will need to comply with this standard if you are an employer, main contractor or self-employed person and excessive noise occurs at your workplace. The maximum acceptable exposure level for noise at a workplace is 85 decibels. For peak noise, levels above 140 decibels can cause immediate hearing damage from a single event and must therefore be avoided. If it is not practical to avoid exposing a person at a workplace to noise above acceptable levels then you will need to ensure that the person is provided with personal hearing protectors that comply with this standard.
This standard specifies administrative responsibilities associated with a hearing protector program; the selection, use and maintenance of various types of hearing protectors; and training and motivation in regard to hearing protector programs.
