You will be required to comply with this standard if you are an employer and excessive noise occurs at your workplace. The maximum acceptable exposure level for noise at a workplace is 85 decibels. For peak noise, levels above 140 decibels can cause immediate hearing damage from a single event and must therefore be avoided. If it is not practical to avoid exposing a person at a workplace to noise above acceptable levels then you must ensure that the person is provided with personal hearing protectors that have been selected in accordance with this standard.
This standard provides practical guidance on the selection, use and maintenance of various types of hearing protectors; and training and motivation of staff in regard to hearing protector programs.
Please consult the Contact Officer for more information and to ascertain the level of compliance that may be required.
