Australian New Zealand Standard AS / NZS 60079:2009 Explosive Atmospheres - Western Australia


You may be required to comply with this standard if you intend to undertake electrical work in areas where flammable gas or vapour risks may arise. Where applicable you must conduct all electrical work in accordance with this standard.

This standard concerns the use of electrical apparatus in areas where flammable gas or vapour risks may arise. It sets out requirements for the construction, design, testing, selection and marking of electrical apparatus, as well as their erection, inspection and maintenance. It also provides guidance on how to classify the explosive risk posed by flammable gas or vapours.

There are four parts to the standard you must comply with:

  • AS / NZS 60079.0:2008 Explosive atmospheres - Equipment - General requirements
  • AS / NZS 60079.10.1:2009 Explosive atmospheres - Classification of areas - Explosive gas atmospheres
  • AS / NZS 60079.14:2009 Explosive atmospheres - Electrical installations design, selection and erection
  • AS / NZS 60079.17:2009 Explosive atmospheres - Electrical installations inspection and maintenance.
