First Class Mine Manager's Certificate of Competency - Western Australia

Description

You will need this certificate if you intend to act in a management or inspection role for certain mining operations. This first class mine manager's certificate is following activities including:

  • acting as an underground manager of a mine employing less than 25 or more persons underground
  • acting as an underground manager or assistant manager of a mine employing more than 25 persons underground
  • acting as a quarry manager of any quarry employing less than 25 persons
  • acting as a quarry manager of a quarry employing more than 25 persons where explosives are or are not used
  • inspecting an underground workplace (other than in a coal mine).

Mining operations include:

  • exploration operations
  • developmental and construction work associated with opening up or operating a mine
  • the removal and disposal of overburden or waste or residues by mechanical or other means and the stacking, depositing, storage, and treatment of any substance considered to contain any mineral
  • the operation of blast furnaces and direct reduction furnaces.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this certificate you must:

  • be at least 25 years old
  • be a person of good character
  • hold a bachelor of engineering in mining from an Australian university or have attained an equivalent qualification
  • pass a separate examination on mining law set by the agency
  • have at least 5 years of practical experience in a mine with at least 3 years of general underground mining experience acceptable to the agency
  • have received satisfactory training in first aid.

The exact practical experience you need to obtain this certificate will vary depending on whether you intend to manage an underground coal mine, or another type of mine.
