You will need this licence if you intend to act as an investigator. An investigator is a person who, for cash or other reward:
- investigates the conduct of people or organisations
- investigates the character of people
- conducts surveillance work in relation to the above
- investigates missing persons.
You may only work as a licensed investigator if you are employed by a licensed inquiry agent, unless you are a sole-trader, in which case you will also need an inquiry agent licence. You must apply for the agent's licence separately.
You may be able to apply for a temporary licence of up to one year if you are an interstate visitor and hold an equivalent licence in your home state or territory.
You will not generally need this licence if you are, or are employed by, a lawyer or an insurer, or if you have been appointed to an investigative role under specific legislative authority.
