Licence to Conduct a Crematorium - Western Australia


You will require this licence if you intend to operate a crematorium. A crematorium is any building, place, or premises designed for the cremation of human remains.

Crematorium licences can only be granted to the following organisations:

  • the board or controlling authority of a cemetery
  • an incorporated association, established for the purpose of cremation, which has been certified by the Chief Health Officer of Western Australia.

A licence will only be granted after the Western Australian Department of Health thoroughly inspects and approves the premises. Once a licence is granted, the holder must ensure that the crematorium is maintained correctly.

If you are approved for this licence and plan to build a crematorium, your licence will not come into force until a compliance certificate is issued by the Chief Health Officer.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • be the controlling authority of a cemetery or a certified organisation
  • have sufficient authority to use the site or proposed site
  • have the necessary buildings, equipment and tools for the effective and respectful cremation of human bodies or be intending to construct a crematorium
  • demonstrate to the Chief Health Officer that the premises or proposed premises satisfies the design criteria
  • provide public notice of your intention to apply for this licence for 8 weeks before an application is submitted.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

As a holder of a crematorium licence, you must:

  • maintain the crematorium in good condition and working order
  • kept the crematorium clean and sanitary
  • employ the required number of attendants to ensure the crematorium is well maintained
  • be prepared for an inspection by the Chief Health Officer at any time
  • comply with any and all directions of the Chief Health Officer
  • notify the Chief Health officer within 24 hours after a cremation is carried out
  • keep a register of all cremations carried out on site.
