Description

You may need this licence if you intend to operate a kennel or keep more than the prescribed number of dogs on your premises. The prescribed number of dogs will differ between councils.

Some councils will offer a separate application for keeping more than the prescribed number of dogs on your property. This application is usually for non-commercial purposes.

Your premises will be inspected by the council ranger to determine if it is suitable for the proposed purpose.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • Advertise your intention to apply, as set out in the local law;
  • Provide plans and specifications of the kennel establishment, including a site plan;
  • Provide written evidence that you, or another person, will reside on the premises;
  • Complete the relevant application form; and
  • Pay the required fee.

The Council will take into account the effect of the kennel on the environment or amenity of the neighbourhood, as well as the likely economic and social benefits. A licence will not be granted if a kennel cannot be permitted under the premises under a town planning scheme.
