You will require this licence if you intend to operate a private hospital. For the purposes of this licence, a private hospital includes:
- maternity homes
- day hospital facilities
- nursing homes
- nursing posts
- any facility the Minister for Health has classified as a hospital.
You can apply for this licence as an individual or as an organisation. Licences are assessed by the Licensing and Accreditation Regulatory Unit of the Western Australian Department of Health.
Day hospital facilities are categorised by the type of care they provide. If you are applying for a licence to operate one of these facilities, you will need to comply with the licensing requirements for that category.
If you intend to operate a nursing home, this licence is not required if the home is certified as a residential aged care service.
If you intend to operate a Class A Private Day Hospital (General Anaesthesia), you must also have your facility accredited with the Australian Commission on Safety and Quality in Health Care.
You may also apply to have your licence endorsed to allow the admission of patients under an involuntary mental health treatment order.
