You will need this licence if you intend to operate a crematorium. A crematorium is a building, place, or premises designed for the cremation of human remains.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence, you must be one of the following organisations:

  • the board or controlling authority of a cemetery
  • an incorporated association, established for the purpose of cremation, which has been certified by the Chief Health Officer.

Additionally, you must:

  • have sufficient authority to use the site or proposed site
  • have the necessary buildings, fittings, works and apparatus for the effective and respectful cremation of human bodies or, in the case the crematorium is not established, have your plans and specifications of your proposed buildings, fittings, works and apparatus approved by the Chief Health Officer
  • have advertised your intention to apply for this licence in a local, public newspaper for eight weeks prior to submitting your application.

A licence will only be granted after a thorough inspection of the premises. Once a licence is granted, the holder must ensure that the crematorium is maintained correctly.

If you are approved for this licence and plan to build a crematorium, your licence will not come into force until a compliance certificate is issued by the Chief Health Officer.
