Marine Pilot Licence - Western Australia


You will require this licence if you intend to act as the pilot in a port. A pilot is a mariner who guides vessels through dangerous or congested waters, such as ports, harbours or river mouths.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.


You will not require a licence if you are undergoing training to become a licensed pilot under direct supervision of a licensed pilot. Other exemptions may apply.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • hold a Master Class 1, 2 or 3 certificate of competency
  • undertake a required number of transits as a trainee pilot
  • complete an approved training course
  • meet the required health standards
  • submit the required forms
  • pay the required fees.
