You will need this licence if you intend to conduct mineral exploration and / or production activities in the offshore area of Western Australia.
A mining licence is designed to cover the commercial mining phase of a project and authorises you to explore for and fully recover minerals from the licence area.
Western Australia's offshore area extends three nautical miles out from the coastal baseline. If you intend to undertake activities beyond this area, you will need to apply for a Commonwealth licence.
A mining licence authorises you to recover minerals from an area specified in the licence (the licence area). Licence areas are based on a graticular boundary (or block) system. If the blocks you intend to apply for are vacant (not subject to an exploration, retention or mining licence) you may apply for a licence over a group of up to 20 blocks. If you already hold an exploration or retention licence over the blocks you intend to apply for, you may apply for a mining licence over 2 groups of up to 20 blocks.
