Description

You will need this licence if you intend to use premises as a morgue. A morgue is a building used to temporarily keep bodies of the dead for lawful purposes including viewing, examination and identification prior to before burial or cremation.

Exemptions

This licence does not include morgues in public hospitals, council or police buildings.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

 

  • Ensure provisions have been made for the keeping of the bodies of the dead at a temperature not exceeding zero degrees Celsius;
  • Constructed the walls of stone or brickwork or other approved material;
  • Ensure the interior surface of all walls are covered with glazed tiles or are rendered impervious so as to be non-absorbent and washable;
  • Prove that all floors are constructed of some impervious material, having a fall to an outlet discharging over a trapped gully; and
  • Satisfy the Council that the premises are adequately ventilated by direct communication with the outside air.
