You will be required to notify the Council if you intend to operate an animal food meat processing establishment or a knackery.

A animal food meat processing establishment is where the carcasses of animals are processed, identified, handled, packed or stored. A knackery is an establishment where animals are slaughtered for pet meat.

Animals that are used in a pet meat processing establishment or knackery include:

  • buffalo
  • camel
  • cattle
  • donkey
  • emu
  • goat
  • horse
  • kangaroo
  • mule
  • pig
  • poultry
  • rabbit
  • sheep.

This notification will also authorise you to sell unpackaged pet meat (provided the storage container used for the meat complies with the regulations).
