Permit to Import Organisms - Western Australia


You will need this permit if you intend to import any organism or potential carrier of an organism. Organisms are classified under the relevant legislation as:

  • permitted
  • permitted requiring a permit
  • prohibited
  • declared pests
  • unlisted.

An import permit is needed for all of these organisms except those classified as permitted. The status of organisms subject to this permit can be found on the Agency organism list.

Application process


Any person who proposes to import an organism or prescribed potential carrier under an import permit must give 24 hours notice to the Agency of the time and place of entry into the State of the organism or potential carrier. Please note that international imports under the Commonwealth legislation requires not less than 20 days notice to the Agency.

If you are importing stock (which are also prescribed potential carriers) you will need to demonstrate that the stock to be moved meet the conditions of entry by the required form for Agency staff to inspect at the inspection points. When the inspector is satisfied the stock you intend to import meets the conditions on the application you will be issued with a permit to import stock and a movement direction will be issued by the Agency.

If you intend to import plants and plant materials (which are also potential carriers) you will need to be inspected and may need to submit additional forms upon arrival in Western Australia.
