Permit to Keep Bees - City of Cockburn - Western Australia

Description

You may need this permit if you intend to keep bees on your premises. This permit will not be granted if the bees are likely to cause a nuisance to the area.

Conditions and restrictions will vary depending on the Council area you are in. For example, you may not require this permit if:

  • your premises are classified as rural and you keep the bee hives at a prescribed distance from any adjacent property
  • you are not keeping the bees on your premises for longer than 8 weeks in a 12-month period
  • you are keeping bees for the purpose of pollinating a crop on your land.

Please be aware that you will need a separate approval to keep bees on Crown Land.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible to keep bees, you must be registered as a beekeeper under state legislation.

Residents must obtain written approval from Council or an authorised officer to keep a beehive in a residential area or a resource zone. Residents may keep up to two bee hives on a residential lot. Approval may be granted for more than two hives on a lot that is not zoned residential.

Once approval to keep bees has been granted, a bee hive owners must:

  • keep the hive outside, and at least 10 metres from any building other than a fence
  • keep the hive at least 10 metres from any footpath, street, right of way or public place
  • keep the hive at least five metres from the boundary of the lot
  • ensure the hive is enclosed on all sides by a fence, wall or other enclosure.
