To be eligible for this exemption you must:
- be an Australian Permanent Resident or a New Zealand Citizen who is entitled to reside and work in Australia
- hold the appropriate certificate of competency or other qualifications to satisfy the port authority
- meet the medical fitness requirements which includes having satisfactory hearing, sight and colour vision and being free from any disease likely to render you unfit as a pilot or likely to endanger the health of others
- have in the last 12 months been the master or first mate of a vessel where a pilot or exempt master has on at least an approved number of occasions moved the vessel into and out of the port.
If you were the first mate during vessel pilotage, you must have been on duty on the bridge on each occasion the vessel was piloted to be eligible for this certificate.
