Port Authority Pilot Approval - Western Australia

Description

You will need this approval if you intend to be a pilot in a port operated by a port authority.

Any vessel moving into or out of a port must have an approved pilot on board. There is to be at least one approved pilot for each port.

There are five port authorities:

  • Fremantle Port Authority (Port of Fremantle)
  • Kimberley Ports Authority (port of Broome, Wyndham, Derby and Yampi Sound)
  • Mid West Ports Authority (Port of Geraldton)
  • Pilbara Ports Authority (ports of Ashburton, Dampier, Port Hedland and Varanus Island)
  • Southern Ports Authority (ports of Albany, Bunbury and Esperance).

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this approval you must:

  • meet the medical fitness requirements which includes having satisfactory hearing, sight and colour vision and being free from any disease likely to render you unfit as a pilot or likely to endanger the health of others
  • have an adequate knowledge of matters the port authority considers important to the safe movement of vessels into, within and out of the port
  • be competent and suitably qualified to be approved as a pilot for the port
  • hold a pilotage licence.
