Registration as a Veterinary Specialist - Western Australia

Description

You will need this registration if you intend to specialise in a specific area of veterinary surgery.

You must be assessed and recommended for endorsement by the Advisory Committee on Registration of Veterinary Specialists (ACRVS) as a veterinary specialist before you can lodge your application for registration with the Board.

The full list of specialisations is set out in Schedule 3 of the Regulations. Examples of specialisations include:

  • equine surgery
  • small animal medicine
  • canine medicine
  • veterinary dentistry.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • hold sufficient practical experience in the speciality
  • meet the eligibility requirements of the ACVRS
  • be recommended to be endorsed as a specialist by the ACVRS.

To be eligible for assessment by the ACVRS you must:

  • be registered as a veterinary surgeon in Australia or New Zealand
  • have been practising as a veterinarian for at least 5 years
  • have completed a suitable training program
  • have successfully completed an examination at the conclusion of the training program
  • be accepted by colleagues and peers as possessing knowledge and skills at the level of a specialist
  • be currently working (including teaching) a minimum of 25 hours per week in the field of speciality.
