Registration as a Veterinarian - Western Australia


You will need this registration if you intend to practise as a veterinarian.

A veterinarian provides diagnosis, medical or surgical treatment of disease or injury in animals, provides advice on the health and welfare of animals and public health and safety of animal food products.

You will also need this registration to offer veterinary services as a company or as an animal welfare society.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this registration as an individual, you must have a veterinary degree from a recognised university, or other recognised qualification.

Registration is available for two types of body corporate:

  • where all shareholders are veterinary surgeons
  • where one shareholder is a registered veterinary surgeon and another is a person of good fame or character.

A body corporate must:

  • have adequate insurance
  • report to the board on the company's conduct
  • ensure the company is managed by a registered veterinary surgeon.

Applicants must also be fit and proper to hold registration as a veterinarian.

You may be eligible to apply for this registration if you hold a current registration in another Australian state or territory, or from certain countries.
