Registration of a Lodging House - Shire of Ashburton - Western Australia

Description

You will need this registration if you intend to keep a lodging house. A lodging house is any building or structure, permanent or otherwise, in which provision is made for lodging or boarding more than six persons for hire or reward, not including the family or the keeper of the house.

This registration includes recreational camp-sites (camp-sites principally used for recreational, sporting, religious, ethnic or educational pursuits or conferences or conventions and where the period of occupancy is not more than 14 consecutive days).

It also includes serviced apartments (accommodation where each sleeping apartment, or group of sleeping apartments in a common occupancy, is provided with its own sanitary conveniences and may have its own cooking facilities) and short term hostels (accommodation where the period of occupancy is not more than 14 consecutive days and includes a youth hostel or backpacker hostel).

If you hold this registration, you must either be entered into the register of keepers, or appoint another person to be the keeper of the lodging house. A keeper manages the care and upkeep of a lodging house. The keeper must not leave the site of a lodging house unless they leave a reputable person in charge.

A lodging house does not cover the following:

  • premises under a publican's licence
  • residential accommodation for students in a non-government school
  • any building comprising of residential flats.
