You will need this registration to operate premises where any irradiating apparatus or prescribed electronic product will be manufactured, operated, used or stored. You will also need this registration if your premises are likely to be affected by the use of an irradiating apparatus or electronic product.
An irradiating apparatus is any apparatus capable of producing ionising radiation of any prescribed type, or capable of accelerating atomic particles under any prescribed conditions (such as X-ray equipment).
An electronic product is a manufactured article that produces ionising, non-ionising, electro-magnetic or particulate radiation, or any sonic, infrasonic or ultrasonic wave. Prescribed electronic products that need registration are:
- transilluminators
- class 4 lasers
- single pulsed class 3B lasers
- class 3B lasers with average output power greater than 5 megawatts
- sun tanning units.
Microwave ovens and class 1, class 2, class 3B (other than those specified above) or class 3R lasers are exempt from this registration.
Each item of equipment, product and the premises where that equipment or product is manufactured, used, stored or otherwise dealt with must be registered.
