Registration to Manufacture, Possess and Store Radioactive Substances - Western Australia


You will require this registration if you intend to operate a premises that manufactures, uses or stores a radioactive substance. All non-exempt radioactive substances and the premises where those substances are manufactured, used, stored or otherwise dealt with (including dealing with radioactive waste) must be registered.

A radioactive substance is any article that has been manufactured or subjected to any artificial treatment or process that contains more than the maximum prescribed concentration of any radioactive element.

A premises does not have to be registered if the radioactive substance is only stored there for less than 24 hours in transit between two other locations.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this registration you must:

  • ensure that your premises have been constructed and equipped with the essential services installed and finished to a standard acceptable by the Agency
  • ensure that your premises are adequately safeguarded
  • be a fit and proper person to hold a registration
  • provide an inventory on the supplementary form of all radioactive substances
  • provide the names, qualifications and relevant training of all persons who will be using the substances
  • nominate a person to act as the Radiation Safety Officer (RSO)
  • provide any other information required by the Agency.

Your nominated RSO may be required to attend an appropriate radiation safety training course, pass an examination in radiation safety, and may be required to hold a licence as the person responsible for the use of radiation on the premises.

The Agency may refuse to grant your registration if you fail to meet any safety requirements. The Agency may also refuse to grant your application if your proposed use of a radioactive substance is unlikely to produce a net benefit, or has insufficient justification when weighed against the potential risks.
