Retention Licence - Western Australia


You will need this licence if you hold an exploration licence and you intend to postpone the development of mineral resources located in your licence area.

Retention licences are a holding title for a mineral deposit and allow you more time to plan to develop the deposit.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • hold an exploration licence in respect of the block or blocks you are applying for (up to 20 blocks)
  • ensure you and your employees who will likely be involved in your intended activities hold relevant technical qualifications
  • have sufficient financial resources and technical advice to carry out your intended activities
  • have identified and evaluated a significant mineral deposit in your exploration area
  • demonstrate that mining the deposit is not commercially viable in the short term
  • demonstrate that there is a reasonable prospect of development of the deposit in the long term.

Application process


If your application is successful, you will be provisionally granted a licence. To accept the licence, you will need to provide the agency with a written acceptance of the grant.

Lodgement process


You will need to advertise your application in a newspaper circulating throughout the Western Australia within 14 days of making your application.
