Security Officer Licence - Western Australia


You will need this licence to act as a security officer. A security officer is someone who is paid to watch, guard or protect any property and sometimes is referred to as a security guard or loss prevention officer.

You will need a separate approval to carry firearms or batons.

You may not need this licence if you are employed by one employer only (who is not a security agent) to watch or guard their property without the use of weapons.

You may be able to apply for a temporary licence of up to one year if you are an interstate visitor and hold an equivalent licence in your home state or territory.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • be a fit and proper
  • have a current first aid certificate
  • have evidence of your completion of a Certificate II in security operations with an approved training provider
  • have successfully completed a written examination based on the content of your training course.

You may need to have your fingerprints and palm prints recorded.

Licences are initially issued for one or three years. Licences are renewed for three years thereafter.

Application process


You must submit your application form in person. Do not sign your form until you present it to the licencing agency.

In addition to your completed application form you must provide:

  • provide 100 points of identification
  • two character references
  • four passport sized photos
  • overseas police clearance (if you have not been an Australian resident for the last 5 years).

Approval time

New applications will be processed in 30 working days. Renewals and endorsements will be processed in 20 working days.
