You may need this licence if you intend to generate, transmit, distribute, supply or sell electricity in Western Australia. Licences are available in four categories:
- generation (construct or operate generating works)
- transmission (construct or operate transmission systems)
- distribution (construct or operate distribution systems)
- retail (to sell electricity to customers).
An integrated regional licence for one or more of the above categories is available if you are outside of the South West Interconnected System (SWIS). You will not need a retail licence if you are selling electricity only to retailers as opposed to end use customers.
If you intend to sell electricity to customers through a solar power purchase agreement (PPA), you will need to hold an exemption from this licence. Solar PPA's involve installing a solar power system on a
customer's premises for no initial outlay with the agreement that they purchase the electricity at an agreed rate for the life of the contract.
You may not need a licence if the relevant generating works, transmission or distribution system is used for the supply of electricity solely for your own consumption, or the consumption of residents of your caravan park. Other exemptions may also be made.
