Licence to Operate or Use Radioactive Substances, Irradiating Apparatus or Electronic Products - Western Australia

Description

You will require this licence if you intend to operate or use radioactive substances, irradiating apparatus or electronic products. This licence is granted for the following purposes:

  • medical, dental, chiropractic or veterinary diagnosis
  • medical or veterinary therapy
  • industrial
  • radioactive luminous devices
  • research
  • any other purposes approved by the Agency.

This licence may also be granted if you intend to manufacture, store, transport, sell, possess, install, service, maintain, repair, or otherwise deal with radioactive substances, irradiating apparatus or electronic products.

A radioactive substance is a substance, including any article that has been manufactured or subjected to any artificial treatment or process, which contains more than the maximum prescribed concentration of any radioactive element.

An irradiating apparatus is any apparatus capable of producing ionising radiation of any prescribed type, or capable of accelerating atomic particles under any prescribed conditions (such as X-ray equipment).

An electronic product is a manufactured article that produces ionising, non-ionising, electro-magnetic or particulate radiation, or any sonic, infrasonic or ultrasonic wave. Prescribed electronic products requiring a licence are:

  • transilluminators
  • class 4 lasers
  • single pulsed class 3B lasers
  • class 3B lasers with average output power greater than 5 megawatts
  • sun tanning units.

Microwave ovens and class 1, class 2, class 3B (other than those specified above) or class 3R lasers are exempt from this licence.

You do not require this licence if you are a nurse or a medical, dental or veterinary practitioner and you are requesting someone else with a licence to undertake any diagnosis or therapy.
