Retail Supplier's Licence (Water) - New South Wales

Service summary

Corporations will require this licence to supply water (portable or non-portable) or provide sewerage services by means of water industry infrastructure. For example to supply drinking water to customers.

Water industry infrastructure is water infrastructure or sewerage infrastructure used for the production, treatment, filtration, storage, conveyance or reticulation of water.

You are encouraged to discuss your licence application with the Agency prior to formally submitting your application.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence you must:

  • be registered as a corporation
  • submit the required application form
  • provide the required supporting documentation
  • pay any fees.

Before this licence can be granted, the Agency must be satisfied that your corporation has the capacity to carry out the activities that the licence would authorise, in a manner that does not present a significant risk or harm to the environment.

Licence remains in force unless suspended, cancelled or revoked.


Fees will vary between $1000 to $9000 depending on your circumstances. Please consult the Contact Officer for more information.

Please contact the Agency to discuss the required supporting documentation that will be required to accompany your application form.

Additional information

Please be aware that If your application is approved, you are required to belong to an approved external ombudsman scheme to deal with disputes and complaints involving small retail customers. You will also be required to implement any relevant government policy with respect to social programs to ensure your services are available to a range of people. For example, available to people suffering financial hardship or living in remote areas.
