You will require this licence if you intend to operate a pharmacy business. A pharmacy may be operated by an individual, company or friendly society.
A pharmacy business is any business that supplies, compounds and dispenses medicines, and provides advice and counselling on the effective and safe use of medicines. Other goods may also be sold by the business, including other health products, as well as beauty products and gifts.
This licence authorises you to run a pharmacy business from a particular premise. A separate licence is required for each premise where you intend to run a pharmacy business.
The premises must also be registered as a pharmacy premises before you can open your business.
A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.
The premises must also be registered as a pharmacy premises before you can open your business. To be eligible for this licence you must:
- Be a registered pharmacist (if you are applying as an individual); or
- Apply on behalf of a company whose directors are all registered pharmacists and in which all shares are held by registered pharmacists; and
- Ensure that your facilities, equipment, security and management will comply with good pharmacy practice and legislative requirements.
A registered pharmacist, or pharmacy company, cannot own nor have a financial interest in more than 5 separate pharmacy businesses.

- Proof of the qualifications and registration status of all proposed business operators and managers;
- Details of the business structure and property leases;
- Services and activities to be on offer;
- Operations, premises and security plans; and
- Insurance and staffing arrangements.
