You will require this permit if you intend to install submarine telecommunications cabling in a protection zone within Australia's Exclusive Economic Zone (Australian Waters).
A submarine cable means:
- a domestic submarine cable
- an international submarine cable.
A Protection Zone permit (PZ) is required for proposed installations within areas that have been declared as protection zones. From the low-water mark to a water depth of 2000 metres is considered a protection zone. If you install any part of the cable outside of a protection zone then you will be required to also apply for a separate permit called a Non-Protection Zone permit.
The Agency has advised that all protection zones are marked on relevant hydrographic charts.
