Traditional Inhabitant Fishing Boat Licence: Torres Strait - Australian Government

Description

You will require this licence if you intend to commence commercial fishing activities in the Australian section of the Torres Strait Protected Zone. This licence is issued to Torres Strait islanders only, or other approved persons under the Torres Strait Treaty. The Protected Zone is the area, commonly referred to as Torres Strait, lying between mainland Papua New Guinea and Australia.

  • Tropical Rock Lobster
  • Spanish Mackerel
  • Pearl Shell
  • prawn
  • net
  • Sea Cucumbers
  • Trochus
  • crab
  • fin fish
  • all subspecies.

Eligibility requirements

Traditional Inhabitant Fishing Boat Licences are issued only to those officially identified as Torres Strait Islanders. To be officially identified as a traditional inhabitant you must lodge a Torres Strait traditional inhabitant ID. The identification form must be completed by the councillor of a relevant community and the mayor of the same council.
