Tow Truck Operator's Licence - New South Wales

Description

You will need this licence to operate a business involving the operation of tow trucks for the purpose of towing motor vehicles.

There are four licence categories for different types of towing work:

  • Category A: accident towing and breakdown / trade
  • Category B: breakdown / trade
  • Category B-Restricted: metal recycling or vehicle demolishing / dismantling
  • Category C: prohibited tow truck.

You do not need a tow truck operator licence if you are towing, salvaging or storing certain exempt vehicles and trailers. A full list of all exempted vehicles can be found in the attached resource.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence, you must:

  • be at least 18 years old
  • be of good repute and a fit and proper person for the purpose of operating a tow truck
  • be able to meet and continue to meet the appropriate requirements in respect of business premises, vehicle and insurance
  • have read and understood the criteria, conditions and procedures for licensing that are outlined in the information package
  • meet all the requirements specified in the criteria.
