Geothermal Energy Retention Lease - Victoria


You will require this lease if you discover geothermal energy under an exploration permit that is not commercially viable, but is likely to be commercially viable within fifteen years.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this lease, you must:

  • apply using the prescribed application form
  • provide details of the area in which the lease is sought
  • show that the area is not commercially viable at the time of application but that it will become viable within the next fifteen years
  • provide all required information and documentation to the relevant authority
  • pay the prescribed fees.



Duration of this lease is for fifteen years unless otherwise cancelled or suspended, or unless it becomes commercial. It cannot be renewed.
