Security Master Licence - New South Wales

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to operate a business which provides persons to engage in security activities.

There are five subclasses of Master licence:

  • class MA: carry on security activities as a self-employed individual. You must hold a Class 1 and / or Class 2 security licence for the security activity you are undertaking (class MA does not authorise you to provide any other persons besides yourself)
  • class MB: provide no more than three persons to carry on security activities
  • class MC: provide no more than 14 persons to carry on security activities
  • class MD: provide no more than 49 persons to carry on security activities
  • class ME: provide 50 or more persons to carry on security activities

Security activities include:

  • acting as a bodyguard
  • acting as a crowd controller
  • patrolling, protecting or guarding any property
  • installing, maintaining, repairing or servicing security equipment
  • selling security equipment, methods or principles
  • providing advice in relation to security equipment or security risks
  • providing training or instruction in relation to any security activity
  • assessing another person's competence to carry out security activities
  • negotiating or otherwise obtaining contracts pertaining to security activities or personnel
  • carrying on locksmithing activities.

This licence may be obtained by individuals, corporations or government agencies.

Eligibility requirements

To be eligible for this licence, you must:

  • be 18 years of age or over
  • be a fit and proper person to hold the class of licence sought
  • consent to having your fingerprints taken
  • have the relevant competencies and experience required
  • have successfully completed any required training and assessment
  • be competent to carry on the security activity to which the proposed licence relates
  • be an Australian / New Zealand citizen or permanent Australian resident or hold a visa that entitles you to work in Australia (other than a student or working holiday visa)
  • have a valid Australian Business Number (ABN)
  • hold driver licence, photo card or customer number
  • not have been convicted of a prescribed criminal offence in the past 10 years
  • not have been found guilty of a prescribed criminal offence in the past five years, with no conviction recorded
  • not have had a civil penalty imposed on you in the past five years
  • not have been removed or dismissed from a police force.

Please be aware that if you are not an Australian / New Zealand citizen or permanent Australian resident, you will need to provide a police certificate from each country you have lived in for 12 months or more over the previous 10 years since turning 16. Each certificate will need to be translated into English (if necessary) and verified by the relevant country's embassy / consulate in Australia.

If you intend to provide Class 1D (Guard Dog Handler) or 1F (Armed Guard) security operatives you must have and maintain at least $10 million in public liability insurance cover.

Approval time

An application for a security master licence will take a minimum of 8 week to be finalised.
