Firearm Collector's Licence - Victoria

Description

You will need this licence if you intend to collect firearms and ammunition for historical, thematic, commemorative or investment reasons.

There are four licence types:

  •     Antique Handgun Collectors Licence
  •     Category 1 Firearm Collectors Licence
  •     Category 2 Firearm Collectors Licence
  •     Ammunition Collector Licence

Collectors can also carry or use their firearms under certain conditions provided they have a Permit to carry or use collector firearms.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility requirements

If you intend to apply for a category 1 or an antique handgun collectors licence, you are required to be a member of a firearm collector's organisation that has been approved by the Chief Commissioner.

If you intend to apply for a category 2 licence, you must:

  • have at least 10 firearms in your possession manufactured before 1 January 1947
  • have held a category 1 firearm collectors licence for at least 2 years.

If you intend to apply as an ammunition collector, you must be a member of an approved ammunition collector's organisation.

Ongoing eligibility requirements

You will need to abide by any conditions set by the agency, including storage requirements. You must remain a member of an approved collectors organisation for the duration of your licence.

Approval time

New firearms licences cannot be issued until 28 days after the responsible agency receives the application.
