Permit to Acquire a Firearm - Victoria


You will require this permit if you are a current firearm licence holder, and you intend to acquire a new firearm. If you are not a current firearm licence holder, you can lodge a firearms licence application form along with the application for a permit to acquire a firearm. Both handguns and long arms must be registered. You must have a genuine reason for obtaining the firearm, for example:

  • for target shooting
  • working in security
  • being a collector
  • because the firearm is an heirloom.

Lodgement process


Lodge your application form and any associated documents directly with the agency. You can use the one form if you wish to acquire more than one firearm, provided they are of the same licence type. Do not attach money orders, cash, cheques, or original documents. You will need to attach any documentation regarding a name change (if applicable).

Approval time

New firearms applications cannot be issued until 28 days after the Agency receives the application.
