Firearm Collector's Licence - Victoria

Description

You will require this licence if you intend to collect firearms and ammunition. There are four different licence categories:

  • Ammunition collectors licence; authorises the possession of ammunition for purely collector's purposes.
  • Antique handgun collectors licence: authorises the collection of handguns manufactured before 1900 that do not take cartridge ammunition that is commercially available.
  • Category 1 firearm collectors licence: authorises the collection of long arms, antique handguns, and handguns manufactured between 1900 and 1946.
  • Category 2 firearm collectors licence: authorises the collection of handguns of significant commemorative, historical or thematic value.

Please note you will not be able to use or carry firearms or ammunition collected under this licence unless you also have the appropriate permit.

A licence defines the need to obtain recognition / certification and registration to undertake a certain business activity.

Eligibility Requirements

If you intend to apply for a category 1 or an antique handgun collectors licence, you are required to be a member of a firearm collector's organisation that has been approved by the Chief Commissioner.

If you intend to apply for a category 2 licence, you must:

  • have at least 10 firearms in your possession manufactured before 1 January 1947
  • have held a category 1 firearm collectors licence for at least 2 years.

If you intend to apply as an ammunition collector, you must be a member of an approved ammunition collector's organisation.

Ongoing Eligibility Requirements

You will need to abide by any conditions set by the agency, including storage requirements. You must remain a member of an approved collectors organisation for the duration of your licence.

Approval Time

New firearms licences cannot be issued until 28 days after the responsible agency receives the application.
